I have over recent years had to have my ears syringed every 3 or 4 months due to a build up of wax causing hearing loss and hearing aid whistle. In April shortly after lockdown I realised that my ears needed clearing but this like many services was not available. I managed to struggle on with partial deafness by very regular applications of olive oil. Since restrictions have eased I have asked my Surgery every few weeks if the service was available only to be told no. I've even had 2 doctor's appointments, for unrelated issues, which I have asked about it. In both occasions the doctor checked my ears and said yes there was a wax build up, particularly in the left ear but no, they couldn't do anything about it.
Recently I heard that the company that provide my hearing aids, based in Aberdeen, were able to remove wax using a micro-suction machine. Yesterday I flew to Aberdeen and finally got my ears cleared, after 6 months of suffering with periods of significant partial hearing loss.
I am fortunate that I can afford to fly to Aberdeen but I appeal to NHS Shetland to restore the ear wax removal service as soon as possible as it suspension must be causing much distress to many people not as fortunate as I am.
