After having my children taken off me by my ex partner because of my drinking.
I went to see my GP to be put on anti depressants. I also was self referred to Kirklees IAPT to address my mental health and also to Kirklees CHART for my alcohol abuse.
At IAPT I was put on a self confidence/assertiveness course and at chart I was given a support worker who I saw on a regular basis and also completed the CGL course, both of which I found to be really beneficial to my recovery. I particularly enjoyed be involved in the group work sessions and made a lot of good friends their.
We even have our own WhatsApp to keep in touch and provide support for each other once we had been signed off from CHART. I have now been sober for over a year and have decided that I would like to help others would have found themselves in a similar situation to myself. I rang the volunteer coordinator at CHART who recommended that I do a peer mentor course which I have just completed. It was provided by Touchstone Support who also recommended a course for me in communication styles and assertiveness provided by the Richmond Society.
I am now on the waiting list to Volunteer at CHART with the ambition of becoming a recovery support worker.
