"Surgical triage unit"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / General surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

Have now spent 2 hours here, with a team of nurses who have only communicated once to us, at end of the senior nurse’s shift. Felt like doing it to tick the box, before leaving to the next shift. None of the 5 nurses have made eye contact in the last two hours. “Surgeons are in theatre” has been the reason but no indication of how long we might need to stay. All this, with my son (the patient) not able to sit, and pacing back-and-forth as has severe back-pain. Not one nurse has asked If he is ok in all this time.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. I’m sorry to hear that the communication from staff didn’t meet your expectations while you were waiting. Due to the unplanned nature of the surgery we perform, surgeons can be called into theatre at any time and it’s not always easy to predict how long these operations will take. However, I agree that communication should have been better on this occasion and apologise for this. I would be happy to talk to you further about your experience and how the Surgical Triage Unit runs and if you would like to do this please contact the Patient Experience Team by emailing QMCPET@nuh.nhs.uk or call 0115 924 9924 ext 86623 so the team can take some further information from you.

With best wishes

Katherine Rooke
Ward Manager, C32 Surgical Triage Unit
