"Unsafe"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

I spent approx 2 hours in the main adult AE waiting area on the 21/9/2020 evening due to a non-covid emergency. I felt very unsafe as many of the patients waiting did not wear at all or incorrectly worn their face coverings.

Even some of the Police staff coming in with patients had their masks under their chin or under the nose.

Nobody from the reception staff or nurses notified these people or checked the waiting area to make sure everybody is wearing the face covering properly.

Even more, during my 2 hrs stay in the waiting area none of the used seats were wiped or cleaned in any way as being done in other parts of the hospital.

Very disappointing experience and a really unsafe place to be in.

The specialist care however was satisfying.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback regarding your visit to the A&E department at the RVI. We are sorry that you felt unsafe in the waiting area due to compliance with PPE, however this is very hard to control and we have to rely on individual compliance to the rules in place. We will forward your feedback to the department who will share with the staff, however if you would like these issues to be investigated please contact our Patient Relations Department on 0191 2231382 or nuth.patient.relations@nhs.net with your contact details and they will be able to coordinate with the Directorate to review your experience.
