"Cleaning worry"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital

(as the patient),

I was a patient in your hospital towards the end of August. I arrived in the ward in the evening. I used the toilet and noticed that the bin for the hand towels was over flowing. Next day the cleaner came in to clean the ward/room. As they were leaving I informed them that the toilet hand towel bin was over flowing.

I then realised that I hadn't seen the cleaner clean the toilet that day. Another staff member came in with a clip board and was looking around the ward/room, I asked what they were there for and was told that their role was a supervisor who inspects the wards. This member of staff also never went near the toilet either, which should have been a priority in my opinion.

When the supervisor left I asked the other patients if they had seen the cleaner clean the toilet that morning, they all said no they hadn't seen a cleaner go into the toilet to clean it, the cleaner had only mobbed the room/ward floor. I checked and the floor in the toilet was not wet like the ward/room floor. And the toilet holder was nearly empty of toilet paper, we had to ask for toilet paper later on in the evening. We were handed a box of hankies. I would like to add that there was three elderly patients in the room/ward with me and I saw slashes around the toilet base, and there was water spilled around the sink unit. The sink was not clean either. I got in touch with a friend and she sent cleaning products up to our room/ward which I left in the toilet and asked the other patients to please clean the toilet when they were finished.

I  again spoke to the patients I shared the room/ward with on the Thursday morning, and asked them all to keep an eye on the cleaner when they came in to clean the room/ward that day. We all watched her and again they never went near the toilet to clean it. I asked the cleaner as they walked out the room/ward if it was ok to use the toilet and they replied yes. I was just trying to jog their memory that the toilet had not been cleaned yet.

Staff are asked to wear masked because if Covid 19, but this member of staff does not clean the toilets. I suppose the toilet in room 6 was not the only toilet that was not clean. There was 4 of us using the same toilet every day, that is disgusting, it turned my stomach. When I got home I throw my slippers out into the bin. All over the country toilets are closed or some blocked off because of this virus, and we were all sharing a toilet that was not cleaned from the time I was there until I left.

I would like to add that the care i got while in the hospital from the staff was excellent, I sent them a thank you card to show my appreciation.

Hello puppisdq65

Thank you for sharing your experience, I have reached out to facilities colleague Morag who have asked me to share the following with you.

Please accept my sincere apologies that you found the toilet facilities within the ward you were admitted to at Inverclyde Royal Hospital to be in an unacceptable condition; can I please give assurances that there is a robust cleaning schedule in place for all wards, clinical areas and departments within the hospital in line with National standards which are monitored and audited for quality purposes on a regular basis, these audit results are also recorded and reported at a senior level.

In addition all consumables are checked twice daily and topped up when required; Nursing staff on the ward, if aware of an issue, can contact a Domestic Supervisor at any time who will ensure the issue is rectified.

I am, however, disappointed to learn that you experienced sub-standard toilet facilities which is unacceptable.

Unfortunately I am unable to check specifics for the ward in which you received your care as this information hasn’t been provided, however, if you wish to provide further information a more detailed response can be provided by our Domestic Services Manager who can speak to you on a one to one basis and answer any questions you may have regarding your experiences within the ward in respect of cleanliness levels.

Kind Regards

Morag, Assistant Head of FM Operations
