"Giving birth"

About: Queen's Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I was induced at 39 weeks due to high blood pressure which was being managed by tablets and was OK at the time. They started me off with the non hormone sponges which didn't work. I then had to have a variety of other things. By the thursday I was 2 cm and was sent to the labour ward, given a epidural and put on the hormone drip.

By the Saturday I was only 4cm and baby's head was still high. I was informed as I had been on the hormone drip longer then I should of been if I gave birth naturally, I would bleed and the emergency button would have to be pulled. I ended up having an emergency c section in which the epidural failed and I ended up having to be put to sleep.

I woke up to the news my baby was in nicu due to taking in some of the general. Whilst in hospital I had to remind them to check my wound and I was released on the Wednesday having then be informed I lost a litre of blood. I wasn't kept fully aware of what my baby's well being was and only found out certain things as they were being discharged.

I then returned to hospital the Sunday due to infection. I had an ultrasound and was released 4 days later. Two days after returning a midwife from queen's called me to say I was on the wrong antibiotics to come in I would be put on an iv and would be able to come home later in the day. I went and was told I was not going home the infection was two bad I was hysterical at having to leave my 4 year old and my newborn.

I ended up having a debridement of my wound leaving me with a open wound of 17cms long and 5cms deep and having district nurses out daily. I'm still having them out and am still not recovered and it's been 10 weeks. Reading through my notes I saw my ultrasound results and it was mentioned something was seen on there which must of been the infection. I wasn't informed this had been found and was left to go home which I believe resulted in the debridement. I am currently undertaking counselling as I am anxious around doctors hospitals and scared of getting infections and ending in hospital again.
