"My 99year old aunt"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d)

(as a relative),

My 99year old aunt had a fall in her kitchen and was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth hospital after a long wait for an ambulance. She was operated on and made an excellent recovery, the physios were willing to let her home but the care package had to be confirmed so we were told she would be discharged in the afternoon.

It's now 9pm and she is still not home having been up and dressed ready for discharge since early this morning.. How can this be justified. All the good that a successful hip repair may have done will be be totally negated by the trauma of this botched discharge. I feel totally impotent in this situation, I can't transport her home myself although I would dearly love to.

Dear RDJM

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. Please pass on our apologies to your Aunt for the delay in getting her home, and for the distress that this caused.

I will share your feedback with the General Manager for Orthopaedics and ask them to respond to your concerns regarding the Discharge Process.

I hope your Aunt is recovering well at home.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Dear RDJM

Please see the response from the Orthopaedics Team:

There may have been a number of reasons for the delay, sometimes there can be issues with hospital transport and discharge medication. We endeavour to ensure that patients are discharged home as early in the day as possible. We are sorry that your aunt did not arrive home until late and for the distress that this caused. If your Aunt would like us to look into this further to understand why there was a delay and to see if there is anything that can be done to prevent it from happening again she can contact is at PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Kind Regards

Nicole
