My wife who is 68 years of age was referred to whiston hospital A and E and then on to ward 1B by our Gp. She had a brain tumour removed several years ago. Since then she has lost all her peripheral vision and is now registered as seriously sighted Impaired and her memory is not very good.
I am my wife’s 24 hour carer. She is suffering partial loss of strength in her left arm and hand. (Possibly stroke or TIA. ? ) when we arrived at A and E. I was told by the receptionist and nurse that I would not be able to accompany her through Triage and had to wait outside of A and E. I tried explaining to the nurse that my wife's memory was not very good and that it would be quicker and more helpful if I accompanied her through Triage. This was refused and my wife became emotionally upset when trying to remember her medications, we have been told by her Neurologist that she has to avoid stress.
The nurse that was looking my wife was very abrupt and said there was no way that I could be with her, when I asked to see my wife, she was very tearful and upset and said that she did not want to stay on her own and wanted to come home. I totally understand the problems with Covid etc. but all I was asking for was a bit of compassion and understanding of our situation.
What a way to treat an elderly patient who been through a lot the last couple of years.
