"Mums visit to A&E"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Emergency Medicine Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a carer),

My elderly mum has Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Today she fell at home which resulted in a head injury. Lots of blood, confusion and worry. My dad aged called 999 and an ambulance crew arrived and were great. They did some tests and said as she had a head injury so she would have to go to hospital.Dad couldn’t go due to covid. I called A&E and was given permission to go in and sit with my mum due to her Alzheimer’s.

The nurses and doctors were so lovely and kind to my mum. The 2 physio’s who assessed her were also so kind and helpful giving us lots of information home to read especially about mobility aids, what to do in the event of a fall, exercises etc. I was sad to hear that this resource may lose its funding. I’m surprised as I think this is extremely important. They gave me a lot of advice for my mum’s care and I’m sure they offer a very important role in patients recovery with their expertise.

My mum was discharged a few hours later and is now resting at home. Because of her Alzheimer’s she has no recollection at all about her fall or trip to A&E. As her daughter I would like to thank all the wonderful NHS staff for all their kind care and attention with my mum especially during these Covid times. You gave her the time she deserved and treated with her with respect that sadly sometimes doesn’t happen with people with Alzheimer’s.

Many thanks again!!

Dear Ali M,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch through Care Opinion and leave both the Scottish Ambulance crew and colleagues at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary such positive feedback.

I am really sorry to read about your Mum's fall resulting in a head injury. This must have been incredibly worrying and difficult to deal with at the time. Our loved ones are so precious. I can appreciate the difficulties in supporting your Mum and Dad at the time and I am heartened to read about the care and support you were all afforded.

I do hope your Mum has recovered from the fall and the head injury.

I would like to share this feedback with the ambulance crew who attended and to help us do that, would you be able to contact our admin team on 01224 812200 and explain that you have been asked to pass on details, eg. Mum's address, date and time etc which will enable us to find out who the crew were?

Again, I thank you for your time in making contact with us.

Take care and best wishes to all the family.

Dear Ali M

Thank you so much for your kind words of thanks regarding the care that your Mum received by a number of teams when she suffered an injury following a fall.

Appreciating that this must have been such a stressful time for you all but so glad we were able to provide the care and support when she needed it most.

We always strive to deliver person centred care and glad that this was evident in caring for your Mum.

I will also pass on your thanks to the team in A&E as well as the Physio team

With best wishes to both your Mum and Dad

Regards

Fiona Robertson

Chief Nurse
