"Pregnancy & Birth"

About: Victoria Hospital / Diabetes & Endocrinology

(as a service user),

I had a marginally complicated pregnancy following a decade of attempting to conceive.  I am T2 diabetic controlled by diet (having previously been insulin dependent Id revamped my lifestyle and managed to ditch all diabetes related medicines) but once I fell pregnant it was evident early on in the pregnancy I’d need to start using insulin again and was given an appointment for the diabetic clinic.  This is where I first met Carol, the dietitian, and Fiona the diabetic nurse.

The diabetes played havoc with my body and at one stage I had to stay in the hospital whilst we figured out why my blood sugars were so unstable.  By this point I was already under the care of Dr Bhaskar.  The last four months of my pregnancy were stressful thanks to the unpredictability of my blood sugars - and the effects they were having on my baby - but the dream team of Dr Bhaskar, Fiona and Carol made it much less worrying for me.  Never in my life have I trusted a team of medical practitioners more.  They held conference calls with me, reviewed my readings regularly, were always on hand for advice and assistance and didn’t once drop the ball despite being presumably rushed off their feet (as this happened throughout lockdown).

Their kindness, professionalism and calm demeanours were, I’m 100% sure, the reason that myself and my beautiful baby fared so well.  Particularly during the scary and strange time it happened in.
