I would like to share my experience of pregnancy during lockdown, having seen a midwife once, zero support, zero education, zero partner involvement, all which are NICE and RCOG recommendations. I have had my blood pressure and urine dipped twice.
Unfortunately for myself, my husband and our baby the long term damage of this is done, however I would like to try and prevent this from happening to other expecting parents.
Hospitals all around the country have taken steps to improve their maternity services since lockdown, however Cornwall seem to be dragging behind, this scares me with such a vulnerable population.
Whilst I understand the importance of infection control. Surely (especially now) the risk of, for example, my husband attending a scan (who lives in same household) does not outweigh the benefits that scan would have on the bonds we are trying to make or the moral support he could offer me if something was wrong. He has not been involved in any part of my pregnancy which has been very detrimental to our relationship and his mental health and probably the long term relationship he will have with his child.
My health (and my unborn babies health) not being monitored is one of my biggest concerns along with the lack of education and support.
This leaves me very concerned with the health inequalities that mothers like myself and children born during lockdown down will be left with. There needs to be an urgent review of maternity services. I think the NHS are going to be picking up the pieces for a long time.
Thank you for reading,
