Attended Dundee Ninewells cardiology unit for replacement pacemaker in July this year. As with my previous surgery, the procedure was conducted quickly and effectively by the competent and good humoured surgical team.
I am providing the following information in case it is of use in future situations similar to mine.
Immediately following surgery The registrar noted that my ECG was indicating an AF episode. Latterly I confirmed this my examining my pulse in the recovery ward. The registrar showed commendable concern and visited me twice post op. to discuss ongoing medication needs due to the AF diagnosis and potential stroke risks. I was discharged with both beta blockers (Bisoprolol )and blood thinners (Lixiana) for long term use.
I am generally a very fit individual with a BMI of just under 25 and take irregular Blood pressure measurements at home. My blood pressure is generally 115/120 over 70/75 with pulse 60/70bpm. My home BP measurements have at no stage indicated AF episodes. I also checked on the output from my previous pacemaker over the last 7 years with Perth PRI medical diagnostics unit and they reported no incidence of AF over that period. I have now had the first months output from my new pacemaker examined and again they report no AF episodes.
So latterly I am inclined to believe my AF episode post surgery in July was a natural consequence of the surgery itself. I believe I came across some internet references suggesting AF could be a transient effect of chest/heart surgery.
So for the present, I am glad to report (with the support of my GP) that I will not be taking beta-blockers or blood thinners until/unless my circumstances change.
Lastly a final thank you to all the staff at Dundee Ninewells cardiology dept. Keep up the good work.
