"I found myself getting frustrated"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I attended the accident and emergency department after the advice from NHS 24 last night after concerns for my child's breathing and high temperature. I have absolutely nothing but admiration for NHS staff and the conditions that you'd have been working though.

However I found myself getting frustrated at the waiting times and the conditions in which I found in the waiting area where social distancing was lacking and patients not adhering to wearing masks. I also found it infuriating when I was taken through to a room after several hours with an unsettled baby to see staff members sitting plaiting each other’s hair and masks at chins. I work in infection control within private sector and with the current pandemic I feel that the hospital in general isn’t taking proper precautions and a further outbreak of covid is Imminent if action isn’t taken. Thankfully for us we are recovering at home

Dear Ls9080,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to your experience during your visit to the ED.

I was sorry to read that you had an unacceptable delay and long wait and this is not the standard we would expect for our patients. We are trying extremely hard to maintain safe social distancing within the waiting room and every patient is advised to wear a face covering or offered a surgical face mask on arrival. There may have been some patients that are medically exempt from this however I will ensure that your feedback is reviewed and that this is reinforced and monitored.

I am also disappointed that your experience of staff non wearing face masks appropriately and seen plaiting each others hair. The staff will be reminded about this clinical requirement of wearing a face mask and professional behaviour within the clinical environment.

I would like to reassure you that the hospital is taking the current pandemic seriously particularly with adhering to infection, prevention and control measures. These policies and procedures are continually monitored by the Senior Charge Nurses and Senior Nurses and quality improvement measures applied.

I am glad that your child was discharged home,is feeling better and recovering well.

Best wishes

Andy
