"New medicine and blood tests"

About: Hama Medical Centre

A relative wasn't given her usual contraceptive pill but given a different one, being told only the brand name had changed but it made her extremely ill (high blood pressure, anxiety) as it wasn't identical to the one she was used to. She should have been given more information about the new product which has bad reviews on the internet. Also, you can have a blood test at hospital without an appointment on the same day with a note from the doctor (saves you waiting and worrying) but was told by a receptionist that this was not an option: you can. We need to be given more choice and better guidance.

We are unable to comment on this individual case without specific details regarding the contraceptive concerned. Please encourage your relative to get in touch with us if she has concerns about her medication so that a clinician can look into her specific case and discuss this with her.

Hama Medical Centre prescribe oral contraceptives by brand in line with guidance issued by the Nottinghamshire Area Prescribing Committee https://www.nottinghamshireformulary.nhs.uk and NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Medicines Management team https://www.nottinghamshiremedicinesmanagement.nhs.uk/policies-and-documents/preferred-prescribing-list/

In some cases blood tests taken at the hospital can appear to be a more beneficial option for the patient. However, with the current Covid climate we advise against patients attending the hospital unless absolutely necessary, and unfortunately we are not able to offer a drop in blood clinic at the surgery.
