This is NOT a complaint, the quality of care in all areas was excellent, .. BUT
there could be significant efficiencies to the benefit of patients, NHS staff and NHS budget expenditure, if the following process was recognised and adjusted correctly.
I have Bronchiectasis,.. the care has been very good, but in the process of treatment I was waiting for a simple Acapella chest clearing device. Due to significant backlog in the Respiratory Physiotherapist's dept. this was not forthcoming. The Bronchiectasis Specicalist Nurse offered to get this for me, but this was refused by the RP department. (upstairs in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital)
This is an absolutely simple piece of kit that could have easily been demonstrated to me by the Bronchiectasis Nurse or indeed by my local GP Asthma Nurse,.. instead I have waited months, had to drive from North Berwick up to the hospital and gone through (repeated) a process that I've undergone many times already by GP nurses and my Bronchiecstasis Nurses.
There needs to a better recognition and sharing of basic skills and responsibilities across the varied health units and trained personnel. I could have walked to my GP Asthma nurse 6 months ago and got this device if there was a willingness to recognise and share skills and simple items of kit. Hope this is of some help.
I have now got my Acapella item today at the hospital, Respiratory Physiotherapy Dept. - lovely helpful nurse, but so much time and money could have been saved)
