"Services being scaled down"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I recently had day surgery at Grantham hospital and it’s a shame services there are being scaled down yet the population continues to grow annually as evidenced by increasing housing projects and referrals to other hospitals for admissions/care.

Hope services can be fully reinstated or another hospital built within the area to provide the care we require.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Like many Trusts, we have had to make some difficult decisions during the pandemic and at pace.

The changes we have made to create a largely ‘COVID-free’ site at Grantham hospital, will enable our teams to carry out thousands more chemotherapy sessions, cancer surgeries and other elective surgeries for patients from across Lincolnshire.

This was only possible following temporary changes to the urgent care offer at the hospital from an A&E, open 8am-6.30pm, to a 24/7 walk-in Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), and transferring unplanned admissions to other hospitals.

We are in the process of setting up many new clinics from other locations in the town and hope to be able to share more information about this in the coming weeks.

We are also looking to reintroduce some services at the hospital, including endoscopy. However, to ensure the safety of cancer and surgical patients, many of whom are immunocompromised, all planned patients coming onto the COVID-free site will still need to self-isolate and be tested for COVID-19. They will only be admitted following a negative result for COVID-19.

For those who are unable to self-isolate they will still be able to get the care and treatment they need at our other hospitals.

These temporary changes are part of the Trust’s response to the level 4 national emergency, and accordingly will be reviewed when the current phase of the response nationally comes to an end. Based on current available information, this will run to the end of March 2021 but could be subject to change. It will be reviewed quarterly throughout.

Thank you again for getting in touch and we will pass on the positive comments you made to the ward.
