"swallowing difficulties"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Oesophageal Lab

(as the patient),

For over a year now i have had issues with swallowing food. It gets stuck on the way down and i have chest pains assossiated with this. I was referred for multiple tests a handfull were carried out before covid hit. I was due to attend for swallow studies and pH studies to assess my swallowing reflex. I understand that there are still issues surrounding covid but i have not heard anything about a new appointment when i call i get a message saying the department is temporarily closed and to contact the referring consultant. First off 6 months is not temporary and second my consultant can not do anything with out these test results as it is my treatment is at a stand still.

I fully appreciate we are coming out of a pandemic but surely hospital services should be back up and running especially diagnostic tests.

Is there a time line for getting the rest of the services up and running because at this rate its noe 8 months iv been waiting i know if it wasn't for covid i would have been seen within a few weeks.

Can someone explain when all diagnostic tests are being carried out? Whats the hold up? Is there another option i can use is there somewhere else doing the tests i can attend?

Thank you for reading my concerns and i await your response

Kindest regards

Dear cherry86,

NHS Lanarkshire like all NHS Scotland Health Boards are recovering services based on clinical priority whilst adhering to Scottish Government guidance on physical distancing. Regrettably the Oesophageal Lab remains closed at the moment as the Lab space is in use by other services and the Healthcare staff are redeployed to support pre-operative services.

If you contact my colleagues at Patientaffairs.hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk Tel No: 01355 585325 they can arrange an update for you if you're unable to contact your named consultant's secretary directly.

We will be writing to all people awaiting testing by the Oesophageal Lab in September with an update.

Kind regards

Rick
