I badly injured my knee in a water accident whilst on holiday in Cornwall (waves are more dangerous than they look!). Due to the circumstances surrounding the covid outbreak, my friends weren't able to come with me in the ambulance nor meet me at the hospital, which left me feeling very vulnerable. Fortunately, the paramedic and EMA were amazing and kept me distracted the whole way to hospital whilst still managing to assess me and provide pain relief.
When I arrived at the West Cornwall Hospital, the care was honestly the best I've ever had. The staff all introduced themselves, took the time to listen to me and to understand what had happened, and to get to know me a little.
They assessed me quickly despite the number of other patients / emergencies coming in, and informed me of what was happening every step of the way.
The day team left and swapped to the night team during my time there, and they informed me of the change over and wished me well before leaving, which was really appreciated. The Care Assistant, Jack, in particular was amazing and had me laughing through the pain!
I was treated with amazing care and compassion. I became quite upset after learning the extent of the damage (including a meniscus tear) and the fact I would have to return home, cutting my holiday short. The nurse with me (whose name I sadly can't remember) was so caring and made me feel a lot better.
It's a small hospital, but they provided excellent care and sourced advice from the specialists in Truro as needed.
I went back the next day for a further scan, which confirmed I had additionally fractured my patellar. The doctor phoned me back to discuss this with me and gave me lots of information on what this meant and how this would affect recovery.
Whilst not the worst injury in the world, it was painful and upsetting, and the care I received made me feel so much better.
