"Still waiting for hysterectomy"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was referred to Ninewells in 2018 and had my first appointment in July of that year. The Dr told me at that time that he was unable to perform a full hysterectomy including bilateral oopherectomy for me despite this being the recommendation from my health care provider who referred me.

I had to go back to said provider who wrote the recommendation informing him that he was able to perform this surgery for me, and I had my pre-op in January 2019 with assurance that the surgery would be done by the end of 2019. At my pre-op appointment the nurse said that if I hadn't received a date for my surgery by July to phone and book another, as they're only good for 6 months.

In July 2019 I had not heard anything from the surgeon or his team so phoned the number given to me at my pre-op to book another and was told by the receptionist that there was a long list, I was nowhere near the top and therefore she wouldn't make me another pre-op appointment. That was the last I heard from them, no letters or phonecalls or communication of any kind and Covid struck just as I was getting ready to phone again and find out what is taking so long.

I feel completely abandoned by my Dr, his team and Ninewells, as they seem happy to brush me under the rug and make my put my life on hold waiting for surgery. It certainly doesn't help that I was first referred to Ninewells for this surgery in January 2016 and told it would be completed by the end of 2016 but unfortunately I moved out of the Dundee area before I heard anything more about this. The entire experience has been an absolute disgrace and a clear failure in duty of care.

We are so sorry you have experienced such a delay in your surgery and had no communication keeping you updated with the current situation. We have been experiencing significant delays in gynaecology surgery prior to COVID and are currently working hard to rectify delays. To manage delays patients who are waiting for planned non-urgent surgery, we have introduced a weekly surgical prioritisation meeting to ensure appropriate clinical prioritisation of patients and any possible alternatives to the previously agreed planned surgery. All patients will be discussed at this meeting prior to an agreed date for surgery. Can you please contact our gynaecology waiting list coordinators 01382 740441 660111, extension: 40301 so that we can look into your clinical details and then we can get back in touch with you regarding further management plans?
