My operation was considerably delayed by Covid and I was fortunate to be operated on on 13th July 2020 soon after Ward 10 in Kirkcaldy Victoria reopened. However, following my hip operation I must thank all the staff for all their commitment, care and professionalism. I couldn't have been in better hands.
My hip had deteriorated severely over the past year and the last few months have been a tremendous trial bearing constant pain while in Covid 19 lockdown
It was obvious not only what a lot of work has been done both in terms of physical change at the hospital but also in the huge training load in response to Covid to allow my and the elective surgery of many others to restart. I am deeply grateful that the staff put themselves in harm's way from Covid to help others. Covid arrangements also seem to require some dispersal of staff leading to increased hours of work. They are working a 6 day week to help clear the backlog of cases.
Particular mention needs to be made of individuals in the staff in and around Ward 10. Andy, Consutant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Chris, Anaesthetist, Charge Nurse Lorna, Nurses Karen, Dorma, John, Beth, Lorraine, Emma, Kath, Susan, and Susan, Nicky (Preop), Keeva (Physio),and Moira (Occupational Therapy). Apologies to anyone I've missed.
I was also delighted that the bit of bone they removed can be of use to others via the Blood Transfusion Service.
Pain levels in the operated leg have already been dramatically reduced and the exercises pre and post op are being so beneficial that I am already out walking short distances in the open air.
My other hip has now also significantly deteriorated and I hope to be back soon to have it done. I'm not looking forward to it as for any operation, but the care professionalism and good humour of the staff make it so much more bearable.
