"Feels like discrimination"

About: Rampton Hospital / Mental Health Service

(as the patient),

I'm experiencing discrimination by staff who are brain washed by staff who I feel dislike me.  Although I am making a lot of effort to be liked by every single staffs some realizes is propaganda against me and try to support me in any way they can but majority dislike me as a result and mistrust me.  I know I'm a good person and i have a lot to offer but my mission goes unnoticed and in vain.  I have never been on the ward where staffs are more bullying and very calculating and I feel like I play there games almost daily.  My named nurse, ward manager and few individuals believe in and give me the benefit of the doubt which I find very encouraging and I feel good when they on shift. i am a genuine generous person but I find difficult to please these who doubt me.

I would like to see change on the ward I am on, by having more diversity which gives hope to individual ethnic minority to tackle cultural insensitivity on the ward.  I hope my story will be received seriously and make a difference.

Response from

Leonie Davison- Deputy Matron MH Services

I’m sorry that you feel you are having these experiences. Its very important to us that the experience and care that you receive is validating and genuine. I would ask, if you feel comfortable, that you speak with your Ward Manager whom I am pleased to read you feel you have a positive relationship with. As one of the Deputy Matron’s in Mental Health what you have written concerns me and I would like to meet to discuss the issues in person.

I was saddened to hear that you are experiencing discrimination by some staff and that you have observed bullying and harassment almost on a daily basis. The new modern matron, Terez Burrows and I have met to discuss how we can make a positive difference to your stay at Rampton Hospital. Terez or one of her deputy modern matrons shall see you in person.

They will find out from you what we can do to make living in the hospital better for you. I shall attend the staff away days and the patient communication days in Mental Health Services to explore how together we can make all patients feel safe, valued for their differences and how to create an inclusive community. Your participation in the ward community meetings and communication days will greatly contribute to improving the lives of you and your colleagues.

For your information we have now completed the report on the patients’ survey relating specifically to racism, bullying and harassment. This report will be shared at the hospital’s Patients Council on 6th October. I hope you will be able to attend. At this meeting patients and staff will be encouraged to come up with ideas on how to improve the quality of patients’ experience and recovery across the hospital.

We shall revisit this issue in 3 months and update you and colleagues to see if you are experiencing positive changes in your daily living.

For your information a bespoke training programme for staff in equality, diversity and inclusion is commencing this Monday 28th September. Feedback from away days, communication days and training sessions will be fed back in the first instance to the Head of Operations and then to the Rampton Hospital Management Committee.

Thank you once again for raising this issue.

It is very sad to hear that you feel you are being discriminated against and feel others are judging you. This is not the experience we want for our patients in the Hospital. I am pleased however that you have found a voice to raise your concerns. I would encourage you to speak to your Social Worker to help you feel safe on the ward. Discriminatory abuse is an adult safeguarding issue and each time you don't feel safe you can report this to help us understand what is happening to you. Take care, we are listening to your concerns and are here to help you.

It saddens me to hear of your experiences, I am very keen to ensure all our patients experience kind, compassionate and non-discriminatory care. As Annett has mentioned we are working together to ensure we address issues around race, equality and diversity across the Care Stream and indeed the hospital. However, we also want to address individual issues alongside this, I am already supporting individuals in this way, but I can only do this for you if you are able to raise your concern directly with myself, a deputy matron or your ward manager (who I note you state is supportive). I can ensure your concerns will be dealt with in confidence and taken very seriously. I really hope you feel able to approach one of us as we will be responsive. I do appreciate that you have taken the time to write a post and highlight this important concern.

Hi Could I just say and to add to this,

I am pleased to see the responses to this difficult posting. Looking at them it is clear to me that your concerns have now been responded to but of course like Terez has said please contact the ward manger or the Matrons if you have any more concerns.

It was a brave thing to post your feedback and I am grateful to you for doing so and to the Staff that have responded

Listening and responding to feedback from Patient is so important

Many Thanks
