"Deafness"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Care of the Elderly (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

My late mother was 100% deaf and was in and out of hospital over a few months this year. What totally amazes me is that when explaining to nurses in this hospital that my mother could not hear, I received a reply " Well she understands me". Now as you are aware face masks, are worn so I would appreciate if the powers that be could kindly explain to me how my mother could understand them, is it doctors and nurses or miracle staff you have caring for patients.

I know my tone is slightly sarcastic but this has not been one nurse saying this it was several. I appreciate they need to wear masks, however they could have written it down for my mother instead of standing there talking to her behind a mask.

Dear PeggyRocky

Thank you for your post.

I am so sorry that your late mother had such a poor experience with communication, this is not the standard we would expect. I will discuss this with staff and the negative impact it can have on a patient when it is so easily resolved by writing it down.

Apologises once again

Kind Regards

Janice
