"I have my eyesight back, and for that I am very, very grateful,"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Cataract Unit Queen Margaret Hospital / Diabetes & Endocrine

(as the patient),

I have been a Type 1 diabetic for close to 40 years. Over this time I have been acutely aware of the many complications that could/would affect me.

It was during one of the routine eye checks (retinopathy) that abnormal blood vessel growth was detected, for which laser treatment was required. I also had cataracts developing.

After 3 sessions of laser treatment, the blood vessel situation has been resolved, but the cataracts continued to develop, quite quickly, to the point of in a 12 month period, normal activities (reading, driving....) became nigh on impossible.

The first cataract was removed in January this year, The second, last week.

At each & every stage of the process; at each & every appointment, staff, whether they be receptionists, nursing or the doctors/consultants made the journey a smooth and uneventful one, With caring, attention to detail & knowledge, they put me at ease. They gave me the necessary information & assurances I needed.

They said to me "we are just doing our job".

To me, for every one of them, it is quite clearly much more than 'just' a job that they do.

I have no complaints.

What I do have is my eyesight back, and for that I am very, very grateful,

Thank you all.

Dear GratefulOne,

Many thanks for taking the time to comment on Care Opinion. I am pleased that you have felt that you are in good hands within the Ophthalmology department. A large majority of our patients have diabetes and we see various complications of patients having diabetes, with cataract formation being a large part of that and, as you stated, abnormal blood vessel growth also. I am very pleased that in Fife, you were/are able to access treatment promptly such as Laser and Injections and of course cataract surgery.

It is very encouraging to hear that all my staff helped to make your visits to the department smooth and uneventful and that you felt that the staff put you at your ease. I will share your kind comments with all members of the team.

I hope that you continue good eye health and If you require anything please get in touch.

Once again thank you for your very kind and uplifting comments.

Kind Regards

Ruth
