"In Relation to the Care of Mental Health Patients"

About: West Hallam Medical Ctr

I have been with this practice pretty much all of my life and never had a problem until I was diagnosed with Chronic/Complex PTSD by my Specialist Psychiatrist. Typically an individuals care is shared between both the GP and the patient's specialist care team. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in my experience with this practice. My mental health team have been amazing at keeping my GP abreast of my current mental state, care and treatment plans. Evidenced by the copies of letters I receive. Understandably, there are occasions where a patient's GP and specialist don't agree when this happens they discuss the differences and agree a compromise. I have been very unlucky at this practice. The first disagreement arose when I moved back to the area from University and my specialist wrote to my GP requesting a routine blood test and ECG, as is standard when taking the medication I am on. I have had these tests done at this practice before as a teenager. On this occasion my GP openly refused to carry out the necessary tests. I complained to the practice about this and was given the following reason: the GP didn't know what the tests were for, why I needed them and it their opinion it had nothing to do with them. As a result I had to travel to the big hospital to have the tests done. The second issue is again in relation to the shared care I was receiving but this time my specialist wrote to my GP stating that given my sudden relapse and rise in anxiety and negative C-PTSD symptoms it was in my best interest to have a specific medicine added to my repeat prescriptions with strict instructions as to the dosage and quantity I was allowed in any given month as it's some distance between my home and my specialist's office. Instead of raising a concern and asking for a reduction in the quantity, my GP again openly refused which spurred a further complaint to the practice. The reasons for the GP's refusal left myself and my mental health team utterly bewildered. I spoke to my GP in an appointment during which I was triggered by my GP's hostile attitude towards me by insulting my specialist and saying that my specialist needs to up their game regarding my care. Plus my GP went on to further compare me to an alcoholic and drug addict due to the medication my specialist was requesting. My GP went on further stating that the action being requested of them was illegal and would risk my GP losing their licence to practice. I was granted a copy of the letter my GP sent to my specialist in regards to this situation. Due to the stress I have experienced under the care of my GP or lack of I have now left the practice and registered with a new one. It's been less than a week at my new practice and already the communication between my specialist, my practice and myself has improved as my care is now being shared correctly. The requests which were previously refused have now been actioned upon. This is a faithful account of my experience.
