"Midwife manners"

About: Barnet Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

This is my first pregnancy and I’m 8 weeks pregnant. I’m happy I’m pregnant but also terrified as a first time mum but even so I was really looking forward to my first midwife appointment, it just went horribly wrong.

The midwife that called me told me her name hurriedly then continued to ask me questions in a monotone voice. She asked me my height and weight. I said; ‘I think my height is...’ and before I could finish the sentence she cut me off with thinking is not good enough, at your first scan ask them to weigh and measure you.

I was shocked! Then she continued and kept telling me terminology I wasn’t familiar with and a bunch of documents I needed to ask for in my subsequent scans including a document which I didn’t catch the name of at my 25 week scan. Bear in mind I’m only 8 weeks in, I asked if when I went to the 25 week scan if I forgot to ask for the document if they’d have it on file to give it to me.

She seemed very angry and started telling me I was asking questions which she’d already answered and she’d never had problems with people asking questions before and she just started being really aggressive! I told her she was being very rude and she said she wasn’t and actually said she would pass me onto another midwife so she wouldn’t have to deal with repeating herself! I told her that’s fine but she kept on and on at me. I asked her name to report her and she said ‘you didn’t even listen to my name and now I have to repeat that too!’

She was so rude and aggressive and then whizzed through the rest of the call in a fast-paced manner not giving me and chance to write any information down and if I asked any follow up questions she got aggressive again. Like she told me at my first scan of have a blood test and other tests and when I asked how the other tests were done she rudely said ‘I told you a blood test and scan’ and continued talking.

I reported her to the head of the midwifery team she told me she was part of and I hope this complaint is taken seriously as she clearly needs training. Her tone was aggressive and unacceptable and no patient should have to deal with someone so rude.
