Four years ago I had to attend the gynaecology clinic following an abnormal smear. Luckily, I received a small procedure to remove the bad cells but it meant that I needed repeat smears every 6 months for a while.
In November 2019, I attended my check up but there were some difficulties with the procedure this time and my consultant raised the idea of a hysterectomy to keep me safe long term. Unfortunately, this smear had cellular changes again which meant that the hysterectomy was a real possibility. The consultant brought me into speak to him and he explained the options for me to both my husband and I and a plan put together for the operation around early April.
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, my operation was postponed. However, the consultant kept in regular contact, assessing my needs and urgency for the operation which then took place in early July.
The team who looked after me from pre-op, on the day and up on the wards were fantastic. So caring, supportive, empathising with the situation and the ongoing effect of the pandemic (no visitors etc). Every person was so kind and considerate, regardless of their role, they cared for me so well.
I would like to thank Dr Konamme, his team and secretary for their care but also to the medical, nursing and care staff in the Day Surgery unit and Ward 6 for looking after me during the hysterectomy.
