"My lovely mums death"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital (Paisley) Royal Alexandra Hospital / Critical Care

(as a relative),

We lost our mum very suddenly and unexpectedly recently and I thought it would be useful to give some feedback. My mum was cared for in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley - coronary care unit, until she became very unwell and was moved to ICU where she died 2 days later. Due to COVID we were unable to visit her until we were notified that life support would be withdrawn as she would not survive. The doctor told us this over the telephone at 5am and went to be with her. We arrived at RAH looking for ICU 2 and nobody knew where it was- the security guard was very apologetic but we spent over 20 minutes trying to find it. The Dr who had been looking after my mum came to speak to us and was very kind. We were also spoken to by the anaesthetist who had looked after her and she was great at giving us time to ask questions and answered clearly and honestly. As my mum was the only patient in ICU we were allowed to be with her together when she died which was a huge comfort to us as a family and something we will be eternally grateful for. The nurses who were on duty that day were kind, compassionate and respectful - we were also given a knitted heart each & my mum was also given one which was lovely and unexpected. The nurse looking after us gave us a little teddy bear for each of my mums grandchildren and they are now one of their most treasured possessions - something totally unexpected which made a huge difference. I would like to thank everyone involved in my mums care and for the time spent with our family at the worst time of our lives. I have no doubt that everything that could be done, was.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to offer this positive feedback following your recent bereavement during a very difficult time for you and your family. It is always reassuring to hear we have provided a high quality person centred approach to our care for both the patient and their relatives. I will ensure your comments are shared with the coronary care team involved with the early delivery of care for your mum.

Kind Regards

Paul Hendry, Lead Nurse

Hello,

I would like to offer my condolences to you and your family on the sad loss of your mum and thank you very much for your post on Care Opinion.

I will share your post with the nurses and doctors in ICU allowing them to receive your ' thanks for everything' comments. It really does mean a lot for the nurses and doctors to receive this feedback from families as it allows them to know that they have helped in some small way during a very difficult time for families. I am glad that you and your mums grandchildren have found comfort in the small gifts offered by the ICU nurse and that you felt well cared despite the difficult restrictions placed upon us all.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Regards

Linda
