"Over the phone CBT sessions."

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as the patient),

During lockdown as I had already started my CBT sessions with a very knowledgeable and empathetic lady called 'Mame', I was given the option to continue my sessions over the phone, which I was initially very nervous about, because I felt my hearing was a bit below par and wasn't sure how I would cope. Or to continue to do sessions online with the option to contact someone as and when for help with it.

After my first phone call with Mame I realised that was the best way forward for me. I found her knowledgeable, empathetic, completely in tune with how I needed her to be to help me move forward.

She asked what I was hoping to gain from the treatment and what outcome I was hoping for. She explained that CBT was not about making you look at things more positively, but to help enable you to respond differently to situations and therefore enable a different outcome.

The whole way through each week I completed a questionnaire to monitor my mood and ability to cope according to my mood before each session.

She listened to everything I had to say and once treatment had started she would praise me if I was on the 'new way' of thinking or would very emphatically but also very professionally give me examples of how I wasn't quite there yet. ( My description, not hers)

Her guidance, patience, empathy and knowledge were a complete breath of fresh air. She taught me the difference between An Aggressive, Passive (me) and Assertive approach and I learnt that for me, Assertive was definitely the way forward. And how to do it effectively.

I was sent lots of information, by email and did homework during sessions to help practice my outcome.

At the end of my sessions of approximately 16 weeks. Mame expained the difference between my scores for mood. I had come down from a high of 21/22 to 2/22.

I still have a long way to go as it has taken 60 years to get to where I am. But at present I feel that I have the tools to move forward. If, somewhere down the line I feel a big slip of not managing, I would definitely get in touch with Inclusion Thurrock again as I found my experience a very positive one from beginning to end I was also told that I would be welcome to do so.

Thank you for all your help. And thank you especially Mame. A wonderful lady.

Dear Blueqc93,

Thank you for sharing you experience with our service.

We have had to alter the way we provide our service due to the social distancing restrictions and lockdown. We have offered telephone, video or online therapy as an alternative for face to face session, but this deviation from our expectations can cause apprehension and there can also be practical barriers. We’ve found that the large majority of our clients have felt that the alternatives are suitable and effective and it’s good to hear you felt the same.

I’m sure Maame will be very pleased to hear that she was able to support you in this way. It sounds like you did well in picking up the new coping skills that CBT introduced to you. Changing the way we think and the way we respond to situations can take time but some gentle guidance and encouragement can help to strengthen these new habits.

I’m glad to hear that you were able to identify your style of communication and to adapt this if it isn’t effective in some situations.

The process of changing lifelong habits isn’t something that can be done overnight, like you say, but it’s great to hear you feel confident and equipped to continue this journey. You are welcome to refer yourself back into the service if needed in the future, of course.

Thank you for being so complimentary, I’m sure Maame will be very pleased to hear you’re doing so well.

I wish you all the best,

Chloe Anderson.
