"Some staff lack compassion and understanding."

About: Addington Road Surgery

For years now I have seen this practice go downhill. I can never trust that a repeat prescription will be ready in time and it can be so frustrating trying to chase one up. I put a prescription request in over a week early in the hope it would be ready but it wasn't at the chemist yet again! I left a message on the Evergreen App but there was no response. When trying to phone a recording told me to go online for prescription queries but I couldn't hear the details clearly. Having gone to the chemist a second time to be told nothing was there I went to the surgery where I was subjected to an unpleasant and upsetting conversation with the receptionist via the speaker system. She seemed annoyed I had gone in person and told me I should have phoned. I told her about the recording and she said I should have spoken to a receptionist, I was there, albeit behind a glass door but I was speaking to a receptionist! Eventually she asked my name etc. and came to the door, pushing a copy of my prescription through and telling me tersely that it had been done some time ago. I was made to feel throughout that I was in the wrong for being there and I got the impression she was annoyed with me. This is not the first time I have been on the receiving end of unhelpful, rude comments. Another receptionist was annoyed that I had arrived a few minutes before closing time to collect a letter and seeing my car in a disabled bay asked me with an accusing attitude if that was my car there. Surely they know not all disabled people use wheelchairs!

It is a shame that the few staff who make life difficult for patients can give the practice a bad name as most of the staff there are extremely understanding and helpful.

Very sorry for the late response to your review. We are also sorry for the experience you had with the receptionist, it is inexcusable. We will continue to put training in place for our reception team. Unfortunately throughout the pandemic and lockdown period, we had several periods of staff shortage due to illness and our prescribing team were struggling with a huge backlog. We will learn from feedback and continue to try and improve the services we provide for our patients.
