"Unable to get information about out mum"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital

Our mother was readmitted to Norfolk & Norwich following a failed discharge to a local rehabilitation hospital. We had two initial helpful calls from one of the Doctors and then a Staff Nurse on AMU on Saturday. Since that time our family feel as though they 'have been passed from pillar to post'. Calling up to 14 times before anybody answered our calls. Our mum was really sick and we had minimal information yesterday. I emailed PALS yesterday and called them this morning and I was promised that a Matron would call me back - almost five hours ago, and I am still waiting. I did manage to get through to the Ward after 7 calls today and was told how mum was in two very short sentences. Working as a senior nurse in the NHS I have found this experience to be extremely upsetting and nerve wracking. I would not expect any of my wards to simply not respond to what are obviously outside telephone calls. We should be able to access information about our 83 year old mother, without having to constantly sit on a telephone. Mum has four children and we decided that there would be one point of contact so that we would not inundate the ward staff with calls. So upset by the way that our family has been treated over the last two days.

We should not have to demand to speak to someone off the Ward so that we can get appropriate information at such a stressful time.

Good afternoon

I am sorry that you have had this experience; it would be really helpful to know who you are so we can look into this with the team, with you. If you are able to contact us via PALS on 01603 289036 or via email pals@nnuh.nhs.uk we would really like to help try and resolve this.

Kindest regards

Sarah Lynam

PALS Manager
