I was recently treated as an inpatient at Crosshouse Hospital, following a flare up of symptoms, in order to speed up tests I had scheduled, prior to Covid, that were cancelled. Though, I still have not received all the results, I did want to take the time to highlight some of the care I received, and specific individuals.
Initially I was treated in Ward 3E. All of the nurses were lovely. However, two in particular stood out, both of whom worked on rotation of one another for the same room, Marianne and Joanne.
Joanne, was always genuinely kind, approachable and professional. Offering great advice and offering an ear, when I needed someone to speak to. I will be forever grateful, for the support she gave me.
Marianne’s positive energy and humour, offered relief, in a challenging environment. She was consistent following up, and kept me regularly updated.
I was then transferred to a general medical ward, 2b.
There, I was treated by a Doctor called Chris. At the point in which he met me, I had been waiting in hospital for 6 days, and was emotionally frustrated. Chris really took the time to listen to me, he was empathetic and his bedside manner reflected this.
I felt extremely supported by him, and he regularly followed up with the relevant departments to get updates on my scans, and next steps. In addition to this, he took the time, to communicate with me frequently, which helped ease some of the anxiety I was experiencing.
He was humble any time I thanked him, telling me it was his job, but I cannot stress enough, how much he helped me and how well he does his job.
I also had the pleasure of being looked after by a nurse, Carol, in the same ward. She too was personable and supportive, always taking the time to speak to me.
All of the above, are a credit to the NHS, and deserve the recognition for doing their jobs, so well.
What did they all have in common? They all were really strong communicators and did so, regularly. At a time, when the required PPE, can also mask gestures and body language. This in particular, highlighted how valuable regular communication was.
Though the circumstances, weren’t of my choosing. It was a pleasure to have met them all!
