"A fabulous team, giving amazing Patient centred…"

I can not praise the staff at Helmswell Ward enough after my experience with them this week.

I was booked in to have a hysteroscopy, any procedure like this I dread, I hate even having a smear and tend to put them off as long as possible.

But the moment I stepped into the room to have my procedure I was reassured and made to feel that I had a real say in what was going on. I was told repeatedly if you need us to stop we can, you’re in charge here. I felt like I had a group of friends around me, all with my welfare at heart, all wanting the best for me, not a room of strangers.

I actually found it all a weirdly uplifting experience, all to often in this world woman will pull each other down, but here was a group of women all doing their utmost to help me and help their consultant, who is also very lovely, there was a real feeling of care and compassion in that room. I wish we could always extend that to each other because within that is true “girl power” or whatever you want to call it.

Sadly my procedure did not get completed, because my body wasn’t playing ball, but I know everyone in that room gave it their all, they were all so encouraging, kind and compassionate totally understanding of why I wanted the procedure to succeed.

They also knew exactly when to call it a day and say enough is enough, I’d begun to smart a little, despite the fact I said I was ok, the consultant and her team where all in agreement that my body had enough. They were of course 100% right carrying on would have been totally counterproductive and they obviously saw right through my attempts to hide that it was now beginning to become uncomfortable.

I am so grateful though for the fact they tried for as long as they did, that they stopped at the exact right moment despite my “I’m fine”, and for the incredible fact that I left the room not feeling anything other than encouraged, reassured and cared for.

Anybody going to the Lincoln Gynaecology unit for investigations should feel completely reassured that they are truly a wonderful team that only want the best for you and truly set you at ease..
