I believe that age discrimination in healthcare on Ward A604 at the Bristol Royal Infirmary killed my husband. DNR was put in place, following what felt like bullying of a vulnerable and profoundly deaf patient, against the wishes of both him and his wife.
Surgery was carried out in the absence of any instruction re: resuscitation, after he, and I, insisted the DNR was struck out of his record. Despite this, I was repeatedly told that no resuscitation or ventilation would be applied. He was not ventilated or moved to ICU, as we had originally been told he would be, and the doctors persisted in saying he wouldn’t be resuscitated or ventilated. An infinitely valuable life was prematurely ended.
Those of us left traumatised by the callousness and inhumanity of the treatment he, and we, received will never recover.
