"Told me things would get better"

About: Crisis Mental Health / Liaison psychiatry

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

The shutdown got on top of me. I was unable to do any of my activities and felt isolated and lonely. I attempted to end it. I was accessed by two workers at the ED. They both listened. I needed to see people face to face and they recognised it.

I started seeing Mark who explained all the symptoms to me. Told me things would get better and asked me to tell him if they weren’t. I felt listened and supported. Mark never condemned anything I said. He taught me how to cope but also take some responsibility for my mood. Gave me tools and although not 100% I feel like I’m on the mend. Mark was kind, never criticised. I took his advice and it worked!

I realised that it was company I needed and isolation impacted on my mood. Can’t think of anything that could have gone better in terms of the support I received from the Liaison team. The team was non-judgemental, supportive, encouraged to try new skills. Mark knew how to support me skilfully. I needed an outsider to guide me.

I would like to give back and talk to people in a similar situation to mine. To let them know it can get better. The call I received from the Engagement facilitator was good and I enjoyed our conversation. I would be happy to meet face to face once we are allowed.

Hello,

I am so sorry to hear what you have been through. We are certainly living in challenging times. I am so glad you sought help and also that you are on the mend.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences and let us know that Mark and the engagement team have helped. It's really kind of you to think of others and want to help them. I hope we, in the engagement team, can make that happen for you. Please focus on looking after yourself for now and get in touch with the engagement team when the time is right for you.

Best wishes

Laura

Thank you so much for taking the time to give your feedback about the Liaison service. I was very pleased to hear that you received a positive experience of the team and that liaison staff were able to help when you were having such a difficult time. I am glad that you are “on the mend” and send wish you all the best for your continued recovery.

I will ensure that Mark is made aware of your feedback as well as the wider team.

It really helps us to get this kind of feedback to reinforce the importance of having the skills and compassionate attitude needed to support people referred to our service.

Thank you again,

Julie
