"Recent bowel surgery"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Colorectal

(as a service user),

Recently had a bowel operation and formation of a stoma.   The ward I was in was ward 27 ninewells hospital. There had been a lot of change due to the current pandemic and staff redeployed.

I felt anxious that the nurses looking after me were those from the eye ward they had no understanding of the nature of my surgery let alone how to care for a stoma. This in turn made me feel uncomfortable and vulnerable.

How is it possible that nurses from the eyes ward can care for individuals who have major bowel operations. Patient safety surely should be most important rather than filling what looks to be gaps.

Dear “Unhappy1”

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns via Care Opinion. I am sorry to hear that you felt anxious that the nursing staff looking after you during your stay in hospital lacked the experience to look after you following your bowel operation.

As you have indicated, we have had to make significant changes in the way we deliver services due to the current pandemic, including the redeployment of nursing staff with transferable skills. In doing so, we always seek to ensure that staff are supported in carrying out their duties and can access appropriate expertise when required. I am concerned to hear that this was not your experience.

To enable me to look into this matter more fully, I would welcome the opportunity to speak to you. If you would be happy to do so, I would be grateful if you could contact me via my PA on 01382 660111 Ext 55813.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards.

Sandra Larkin, Lead Nurse
