"The whole experience was very demoralising"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I had to call an ambulance due to having back to back seizures, I got taken into a& e and assessed (the third time being in a& e in 3 weeks). My tests all came back clear as they had been previously, however, they said they were admitting me. I was still in and out of seizures very frequently and could tell the doctor was getting frustrated as they couldn’t do their assessment quick enough.

I then got moved somewhere else, without being told anything, and left in a room alone for an hour before anyone came to see me. 3 people then came in, as they walked into the room I started having a seizure, when I came back around, the consultant was speaking to me, expecting me to reply even though I didn’t know what he’d said due to having a seizure. I was still in and out of seizures during the time the consultant was in the room, and they kept speaking whilst I was having them, even though I told them I can’t hear what they’re saying whilst I’m having a seizure. At one point this doctor told me I had heard what had been said, and asked me what I wanted them to do.

The whole experience was very demoralising and I was made to feel very belittled. The consultant basically told me I was faking the seizures and couldn’t give me the time of day. I was discharged without really knowing what was going on as the consultant wouldn’t repeat what had been said as they presumed I could hear them during a seizure.

Dear jejwus

Please accept my sincere apologies for this poor experience. If you would like to contact PALS direct and given them some details and I will be able to follow up and discuss with individuals concerned. The PALS team can be contacted via PALS@ulh.nhs.uk or 01476 464861 and please quote CO770786.

We take patient concerns very seriously and would not like anyone else or even yourself to experience the same again.

Regards

Teresa
