"Rather let down with my experience that day"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I attended the emergency department after being advised to after a fall downstairs at home 3 weeks previous as to which my foot was swollen and I was unable to weight bear.

Upon attending the department I was triaged and told I was low priority due to waiting so long before attending, fair enough.

I was shouted through by a nurse practitioner who was rather rude and dealt with me as if I was a waste of time. I could barely walk and held myself against my mum who attended with me but the nurse informed us my mum would have to wait in the waiting area in an abrupt manner.

After a quick examination of my foot the nurse had ruled that it wasn’t broken but would xray to be on the safe side so off to x ray I went.

The xray returned and I was called back in, my mum was allowed in with me this time and the nurse practitioners attitude changed.

The nurse practitioner informed me I had in fact broken something but as I walked in I could walk back out and sent me on my way.

Thus in turn has resulted in the break of my foot getting worse due to no support and I was called into the fracture clinic a week or so later where they were concerned I was allowed to leave unsupported and sent for an xray right away.

The doctor I seen expressed concern at the no support and I was placed straight in a boot with crutches which I would then remain in for months to come. My foot completely collapsed and I’m now left with a deformity that’s impacting on my daily life called Charcot foot.

I’m suffering in pain, with hot swollen left foot and I feel rather let down with my experience that day. I’ve spent many times in the emergency department and don’t usually have a bad word to say about any staff members.

They are  over worked and underpaid but on this occasion in a rather empty looking department (believe me I understand there is better things for them to do), I felt that I wasted this nurses time and they already made their mind up before talking to me, leaving me with a life long deformity.

On the other hand I cannot fault the experience I have had with the doctors who seen me after in the fracture clinic. Then in orthopaedics the doctors have been nothing but pleasant and thorough in aiding my recovery and easing my fears when it comes to my foot.

Dear Holduffyx

I'm sorry to hear that you had a poor experience when you recently visited our Emergency Department / orthopaedic assessment unit. As part of our Covid19 response we've done a lot of work on trying to streamline the pathway for orthopaedic patients but clearly you've not had a good experience of this which I'm sorry.

It is difficult to comment much more as we've not been able to look at your case without further information. We would be happy to do this. If this is of interest I would ask that you please send an e-mail with the above summary and your name / CHI / Date of Birth to me at fraser.mcjannett@aapct.scot.nhs.uk

I hope that your foot is a little better and once again, apologies for your poor experience.

Best Regards
Fraser McJannett, General Manager, Surgical Services, University Hospital Crosshouse
