My mother called her GP surgery re a small lump on her back which was causing discomfort. She had a teleconsultation about it but was advised to get back in touch if it didn’t improve after applying heat and other recommendations. Following advice of the Scottish government that our NHS is still available for non-covid related problems, she got back in touch to say it wasn’t improving and was painful. She was aware that all minor operations and dermatology clinics are suspended at the moment but she thought that by letting the nurse look at it she might be placed on a waiting list to get this removed when these services eventually start to resume. Instead, she was left feeling that she was a nuisance and was advised that ‘they’ are not dealing with anything like that just now but she could go to a private clinic. She was astonished that seeking private treatment was recommended as the nurse was not aware of her financial circumstances. She is now left wondering what to do about the lump as she has not been placed on the waiting list for minor ops clinic at her surgery. She feels very let down by the health service she really values and has contributed to for years. If staff are recommending private treatment, it feels like they are openly promoting inequalities in healthcare.
