About: Southmead Hospital

The hospital feels organised, clean and safe. I received a COVID test before my appointment and then a mask on entry. A specific route was communicated to me and staff communicated clearly with me during my whole time in hospital (which was under 2 hours from start to finish - amazing considering the current climate). I was only briefly near two other patients for a short period of time in the waiting room, but mostly I didn't see any other members of the public as I was quickly brought into the surgery and 'processed'. This made the whole experience feel safe and organised.

The staff at the plastic surgery department were caring and professional, keeping me updated throughout my time there. There is a positive atmosphere in the department with everyone making friendly conversation with you. The plastic surgeon who performed the mole removal was incredible! She clearly explained how she was going to perform the procedure and then made sure I understood how to take care of my scar afterwards. She genuinely cared about my welfare and after-care and was more than happy to answer questions.

During surgery I was a little nervous but the staff took excellent care of me. They made me comfortable by making light conversation and laughs with me. The surgeon completed the removal so quickly and completely pain free (after the aesthetic was administered)! I was amazed. The other surgeon next to me was very reassuring and talking to me the entire time. I really appreciated their understanding and empathetic attitude (as I imagine they do this every day, but they really seemed to understand how I would feel scared and did their best to calm my nerves).

After the surgery, I was taken into an outpatient room nearby with a nurse who made me a cup of tea to calm down. We chatted which made me feel better and she explained what I needed to do at home.

Overall, I'm so impressed with Southmead Hospital. The NHS staff are hard-working, highly skilled and incredibly empathetic. I couldn't ask for a better experience. Thank you so much.
