"No compassion"

About: City Hospital (Birmingham)

I took my partner to the a&e dept as he was showing symptoms of appendicitis and was in agony. We spoke to the receptionist who told us to take a seat. There was several patients coming in after us that got seen first that were laughing and joking in the waiting room whilst my partner was writhing on the floor in pain, after 2 hours I asked the receptionist how long it would be before seeing a doctor who didn’t seem to care in the slightest and just told us to ‘wait our turn’ and that it could be 4+hours. The triage process is far too slow you get your obs done by a nurse and then your thrown back out into the waiting room for another couple of hours without any regard fo pain or discomfort. After nearly 4 hours of agony I again told the receptionist how much pain my partner is in and that a ruptured appendix can be fatal and we had been waiting 4 hours already. Finally a very nice doctor saw us. All in all nurses and receptionists appear to lack common decency and compassion, some very rude and make it quite obvious to patients that they are an inconvenience to them. The a&e dept is very old and run down and the room we were in didn’t even have a working call bell, my partner was hooked up to a drip stand that was attached to his bed in a side room so if I hadn’t been there he wouldn’t have even been able to leave the bed to call the nurse for pain relief as he was virtually trapped in the bed. Would never return to this a&e

I am sorry to hear of your negative experience at City Hospital, this is not the standard of care that we aim to provide. We are making some changes to our A&E department at present, bringing in the children’s assessment unit, and I am sorry you feel the department is run down. We are constructing a new hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, that will house a new modern emergency department to replace the facility at City Hospital as we recognise it is in need of updating. However, we would like to investigate further your complaint about how staff were rude and lacked compassion. As such, please could you contact Annabel Bottrill (annabel.bottrill@nhs.net), the Matron within the Emergency Department so she can look into your concerns. Kind regards, Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
