It’s all too easy to complain and criticise these days, especially when everyone is under stress, and the pressure to deliver a better quality of service for much less money, takes its toll, but I have to say that when you’ve worked in public service, as I have, you come to understand the difficulties faced by an NHS surgery bursting at the seams. Yes, Sunbury Health Centre has had its issues, but anyone can see the strides they’ve made in improving, throughout all areas of service delivery. No system is perfect when having to cater for a wide reaching community, but I am so grateful to the Doctors, Nurses and Support staff that continue to serve us in tough and uncertain times. The partners, management and stake holders have increased staffing levels in reception, taken on more support staff to assist with enquiries, to free up doctors and nursing staff to focus on patient care. They have taken on board all the feedback provided by the extended community and have worked tirelessly to address our concerns. Life is challenging and stressful and illness and injury can have life threatening and life changing implications that make it difficult to be cheerful. But with us as grateful patients, who let’s not forget, need this practice, along with the understanding from and towards all practice staff, a fine balance can hopefully be met. Philosophy says, “Empathy has an amazing power for social change. We never really know what’s going on for others and won’t even begin to understand a person until we’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” So maybe we can give each other a thought and that consideration when we next feel aggrieved, angered, upset or hurt by someone. To end, I’d like to say thank you to all the staff at Sunbury Health Centre, for your contribution towards making it a practice that, I am for one, immensely proud of.
