Our elderly mum, who had a number of underlying health conditions, had a huge stroke in April 2020, we were very apprehensive regards both the stroke and Covid. As a precaution mum was screened on admission and was covid negative, however her stroke was massive and she was unconscious and unresponsive and after immediate assessment, scans etc the medical team discussed palliative care with us. Mum received the most sensitive palliative care, we were allowed to visit with some appropriate restrictions, during visits we were asked to wear PPE and we were fully instructed in how to wear this to protect us, our Mum, plus to protect the staff and other patients.
Mums palliative and end of care was supported by the palliative care team who visited the ward, and the hospital Chaplin. The nurses, care staff and doctors (particularly the F2) were very kind, introducing themselves and checking in with us frequently over the 5 days mum was in their care. The unit was super clean and the domestic team were very visible and attentive.
When mum died, the handover of information regards what to do next was communicated very clearly and written information given, alongside heartfelt condolences.
"All of the staff were very kind"
