"Treatment from a side effect of anticoagulant"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Services

(as the patient),

After a pulmonary embolism in December 2919 I was placed on an anticoagulant. I suddenly began to suffer from prolonged heavy bleeding I attended the Women’s day clinic and was promptly admitted. They needed to stop the bleeding and investigated the root cause. All of which was complicated by the anticoagulant; the proven drugs and procedures could result in blood clots.

I was admitted to ward 208 Gynaecology. From my very first encounter with the team from the women’s clinic to the ward and through all the work they did to help me the information was clear precise and honest. I could ask any question and nothing was too much. They introduced themselves so I knew all their names and they treated me with dignity and respect - I was an emotional patient who was very wary about the procedures they had to perform. They make it clear that the treatment was lead by my tolerances and dealt with in a kind profession and just downright humane manner. It made for me a very distressing situation bearable and I cannot thank them all enough. The ward was clean the food was good and ALL staff were fabulous. PPE was hampering the way the Team wanted to deliver their care but they did so so well.

Dear PAFB64

Thank you for taking the time to share what must have been a very frightening experience of prolonged heavy bleeding, and the investigations into the cause of this. I am delighted to hear that the team from the Women's Day Clinic to ward 208 communicated with you in such a way that kept you informed and allowed the opportunity to ask questions to help understand your condition and care. It is natural to feel apprehensive about procedures that you are unfamiliar with, and reassuring that you felt that at all times you were treated with dignity and respect.

I will share your thanks with the medical, nursing, catering and domestic teams involved in your care who, although they appear quite different in the guise of PPE, for the protection of themselves and our patients, can still convey how 'fabulous' they really are.

I hope you are having a speedy recovery following your hospital stay.

Kind Regards

Margaret Meredith

Nurse Manager
