"Wonderful, caring nurse"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18)

(as the patient),

I attended Wishaw General hospital for a bone marrow biopsy.   I would like to extend my absolute gratitude to the wonderful, caring nurse who carried out my bone marrow biopsy - Jane. On arrival, Jane greeted my wife and I with warmth and reassurance, she immediately put me at ease as I was worried about getting the biopsy. Jane carefully explained how she was going to carry out the procedure, she gave us time to process this. Jane very kindly allowed my wife to be present during the procedure as she understood that my wife’s support would be crucial at this time.  She ensured my comfort throughout the procedure, making my over-all well-being priority at all times.   Jane was assisted by Alex who was also extremely caring, kind and reassuring.   After the procedure, Jane explained what the next steps would be in a really kind, sensitive and professional way.   Jane also phoned me at home in the evening to ensure I was feeling ok,   not in any pain and there wasn’t a problem with my wound, I thought that this was a fabulous example of excellent patient care.

I will always be so grateful to Jane for her professional skill, her kindness and concern and her lovely, warm personality. Jane is an absolute credit to the NHS, especially as this extremely stressful time.   I’m sure Florence Nightingale would be very proud of this nurse at Wishaw General Hospital.

Dear JH20,

Thank you for taking the time to recognise Jane's professionalism. This is the level of expertise and person-centred care that we aspire to for all.

Good clear information and communication are key to all successful healthcare interactions and there's always likely to be a positive outcome for our patients and their families when done with kindness and compassion.

I'll make sure your feedback gets to Jane and Alex and will also share it more widely with colleagues for reflection and learning.

Kind regards

Rick
