"91 yr old mum rushed to hospital"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Wishaw / Care of the Elderly (Wards 9-12) University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My 91yr old mum had to be rushed to hospital one night at the beginning of April with a suspected infection (not Covid-19) & probable TIA. I'm her son & carer but couldn't go with her & couldn't visit because of the Coronavirus protocols. First of all I've got to commend the paramedics/ambulance guys who were brilliant in their understanding of the situation as mum has dementia & it was very hard not being able to go with her.

Also, due to the dedication & care from ALL the staff in ECU & Ward 9 mum was able to get back home just over a week later. They also put up with a continually worried son phoning a lot to find out how she was & what was happening. The staff were extremely helpful & totally understanding & I have nothing but admiration how they dealt with me, & must be dealing with many other family members, during this extremely trying period.

My heart-felt thanks go out to ALL of them for taking such good care of my mum in what must be an extremely difficult time for all hospital & ambulance staff.

Dear Scones,

Thanks for taking the time to get in touch; it will mean a lot to the staff to hear your "heart-felt" thanks.

You're right, these are challenging times for staff, patients and carers alike; ordinarily, we would have welcomed you into the hospital with your mum, day or night, as we recognise and value the crucial role that carers have.

I'm so pleased that your mum managed to return home so quickly, I'm sure that's a relief for you both and I hope your experience will provide some comfort for others who may find themselves in a similar position you; they can be assured that the staff are working tirelessly to provide high quality, person-centred care for all those in their charge.

I'll be sure to pass on your feedback to all the staff in the areas you've mentioned.

I hope you both keep safe and well.

Kind regards

Rick

Dear Scones,

Thank you for sharing your experience regarding your Mums recent admission to hospital. This can be a difficult time in normal circumstances, but so much more worrying at present, due to you not being able to accompany and provide support to your Mum or visit when she was in the ward.

I hope she is settling in at home again and continues to make good progress with her recovery. I will pass on your positive comments to the Occupational therapists who have worked with your Mum.

Kind regards

Fiona Cross

Dear Scones,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback on CareOpinion. I am very sorry to hear about your mothers query TIA and infection. That must have been a very worrying time for you and as you say, with the added anxiety of not being able to see her, I cannot begin to imagine how worrying this would have been.

I am however really pleased to read the kind comments you say about our staff and the staff within the wider NHS Scotland. These times are really challenging for everyone but we must not loose sight of treating people as individuals and supporting their families. It is clear this has happened here.

I am also pleased to hear that your mother has been discharged and I hope she is feeling a lot better.

If you would like I can pass on your thanks to the crew that attended your mother and let them know she is back home. In order to do this can I ask that you email scotamb.feedback@nhs.net and provide the date, time and address that we attended as well as your mothers name. This will allow me to locate the job. It will also be very helpful, as it may be the team and not me that picks up the email, that you make reference to your CareOpinion username.

Please stay safe and I wish you all the very best.

Kind Regards

Alan
