"I was humbled and proud of what I witnessed today"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

My experience of the NHS Fracture Clinic team at Nottinghams Queens Medical Centre

I had a nasty fall while out walking last Friday  ...and found out a few days ago that I have broken several bones in my wrist and my hand! Today, I reluctantly ventured into the Queens Medical Centre to see a " Bone Doctor" to get my misaligned arm bone pulled back into place, get X rayed, and get a cast fitted.

The Fracture Dept had only just moved their entire operation over to this Treatment Centre within the last 48 hours because of Covid 19, but you wouldn't have known unless you asked. Everyone I met and who treated me (big thanks to Yvonne & her colleagues in the plaster/trauma unit you were amazing) was caring, friendly, dedicated and professional, despite their concerns about their own health and that of their families.

None of the staff there had been tested for the virus or been given much protection equipment either. It was an artificial and strange environment, with barriers between patients and staff, and social distancing measures in place everywhere, hardly warm and welcoming..and yet the team of workers at all levels soldiered on and gave everyone the care, attention and comfort that they needed, without question.

I was there for a few hours, and observed the comings & goings during that time, and gosh I was humbled and proud of what I witnessed today. I was treated so well, and my injury and my fears were managed and treated perfectly, as were many many other patients too. These people are a real credit to the NHS, and just highlight the big difference between a job..and a vocation.

I asked my Consultant if he was worried about himself and his colleagues given the risk of becoming infected, and he said they all felt a duty to help their patients above all else, and couldn't let people down. So I just wanted to thank everyone out there, especially the team who looked after me today, who are dedicated to caring for those that need it most, in the most challenging and scary conditions, and who still give their heart and souls. Thank you šŸ™šŸ»šŸ¤•šŸ™šŸ»
