"Medical Staff who don't practice social spacing"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I went to East Surrey Hospital on Monday for a pre-booked appointment.

I was horrified when I saw a group of about nine Matrons at about 8.45am standing close together chatting in the corridor outside of the Operations Centre. I feel this is an appalling example for the public to see.

Then when I went to the department for my appointment at about 8.50am the reception area was jammed packed with doctors, nurses and admin staff being addressed by the head of the department!!

Funnily enough I was saved from my appointment when I was told the person carrying out the procedure on me couldn't do it because they hadn't been fitted for a mask!!!  Lucky escape.

What is being done about this in an "Outstanding" Hospital?

Dear Blownaway by incompetence

Thank you for your feedback and observations. Whilst I absolutely recognise that staff need to social distance it is still essential that we are able to communicate and support each other through this challenging time. I will certainly feedback to the teams about public perceptions and how important it is to role model national guidance.

As a trust we have been working hard to minimise meetings, enable remote working and ensure those delivering care are supported both in terms of equipment and emotional support, whilst maintaining effective communication in what is a very worrying time.

best wishes

Nicola Shopland

Divisional Chief Nurse Medicine

Thank you for your response.

To paraphrase a war time phrase - "Careless Thought Costs Lives!"

You are absolutely correct and we are learning and finding our way through this situation; I would like to think we have changed approaches this week and will continue to refine our approach as this situation progresses.

Thank you

Nicola
