"Miscarriage"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I decided to have medical management on a miscarriage at 9 1/2 weeks pregnant at the NNUH. I was given the tablet on and sent home. Two days later, in the early hours I began to bleed uncontrollably. I drove myself to A&E were I proceeded to bleed heavily all over the place. After being triaged I was taken to Resus for monitoring. At this point my iron levels were checked and they were fine. Luckily my friend who has experience in this area was with me as at this point I was left on my own, bleeding heavily not really knowing what was going on.

Eventually I was moved to Cley ward where things started going downhill. I was pale, my heart was racing and I was passing huge clots. A consultant obstetrician popped in to check I was ok and had to argue with the nurses to get me some fluids. I was then moved to another room where my obs were taken every couple of hours. Every time I got up I passed a lot of blood and felt very faint. Once when I went to the loo I passed a clot the size of a grapefruit and the floor was covered in blood. I fainted as I was so weak so pressed the nurse button. No one came. I managed to crawl back to my room leaving a trail of blood. Finally someone came but told me curtly there was a delay as they were “dealing with an emergency”. I fainted again in front of the nurse but they just put me back to bed and left me alone. When someone did check on me I was told the bleeding was slowing so I should be able to go home. I tried telling them it didn’t feel like that to me. They tried to find out what was going on internally and to get me to push out any remaining tissue but I was so weak I couldn’t do it. They started talking about surgery at about 6pm.

Then my body decided to give up. I had lost a lot of blood and I remember just wanting to go to sleep. I heard the HCA come in and do my obs and it was like an out of body experience as I knew they were starting to panic but I couldn’t open my eyes to see why. My bp was ridiculously low, my heart rate was scarily high and my limbs were so cold with my veins shutting down. Thank goodness the obstetrician came to check on me and took one look at me and demanding I got blood ASAP. I remember lots of voices and people trying to talk to me but I just couldn’t respond.

It took a while but after getting bloods into me I began to pick up and come back round. I opened my eyes to a room of very worried looking people. They then decided to take me to theatre. I stayed in that night by myself - the HCA checked on me every now and then. The following lunch time I was told to go and queue up in the corridor with all the pregnant women. I burst out crying and fled back to my room, going hungry. I was discharged later that day and had no follow up what so ever.

My poor husband was been traumatised by the whole situation as he saw me almost die and I’m now suffering from PTSD with nightmares, flashbacks and anxiety. We are not impressed with the level of care in Cley ward at all.
