"5 night stay that will live long in my memory"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Victoria Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

After A&E visit where initial diagnosis considered to be Kidney Stone/s was discounted, based on scan results, I was sent home with raised infection markers in blood and some painkillers and antibiotics to help me on my merry way. Some 2 days later, and with NHS 24 now on speed dial, I attended local out of hour appointment with GP at QMH Dunfermline. The ship steadied once again with new pain killers  and antibiotics, I was all set.......mmmm.

The trusty NHS 24 script awaited, and only 2 days later.

GP admitted me to Victoria, markers way higher and further investigation began. The Consultant/Registrar seemed to get to the hub of the matter much more quickly and following a scan the next day confirmed my Gall Bladder had Chucked It.

Roll on Theatre 7, a mad Anaesthetist, crack Surgeon and his team......before you know it, the diet promised since New Year is actually starting to work.

Back in Ward 53, the staff were unbelievably attentive and looked after me incredibly well.

In what at times appeared like a thankless task for all staff members (no political broadcasting here), I was humbled at the level of care and understanding they continued to provide, despite the madness. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a field hospital.......it was in Fife, in March yet some of the elderly inpatients were restless and spoiling for a fight......or rumble at least. To their credit, the staff spent as much time counselling as hands-on healing the sick and wounded, their efforts individually and collectively as a team should be applauded.

Doubt there’s a Trip Advisor review that could ever adequately cater for my ‘5 Day’ experience, one I’ll never forget ...... but for all the right reasons.

Despite the lack of facilities, i.e. no pool or gymnasium, this was a stay that’ll live long in the memory.

My thanks to all the Nurses, Auxiliaries, Consultants, Registrars, Jnr Dr’s, Anaesthetists (mad or otherwise), Cooks, Cleaners and Bottle Washers.......you’re what makes the NHS what it is and continues to be. A little leg-up from the Scottish Government wouldn’t however go amiss.

Hi Bobbb

Thanks for sharing your 'story' on Care Opinion. It sounds as though you have been through a tough time and I hope you are well on the mend.

I must admit to having a little chuckle to myself at the way you presented your experience. Well done to you for retaining your sense of humour......

The staff who cared for you at the Victoria Hospital sound as though they are doing an amazing job and I am sure they will be delighted with your feedback.

NHS 24 on speed dial! Love it.

However, your comment on the 'NHS 24 script' has not escaped me. It is appreciated that callers to 111 are asked a number of questions in relation to their details, symptoms, previous medical history etc and I understand for some people this can be frustrating. We have worked hard to try to reduce the questions to improve this. These questions are asked for patient safety reasons and to ensure we achieve the most appropriate onward care or advice for patients and callers. However, this is very much on our radar and your feedback is very welcome.

It looks as though we recognised that you needed to be seen by a Healthcare Professional face to face when you were ill. If you have any further feedback about your calls to NHS 24, it would be good to hear from you. You can get me on 0141 337 4597 or by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.

With best wishes

Shona
