"It was very frightening"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Ophthalmology (Eye Problems)

(as a service user),

I unfortunately had a traumatic experience of what should be a straightforward operation. I felt like I was not a 'person'. At no point was it explained to me that the surgeon was mentoring and it was very frightening. As soon as I lay down my eye was poked without warning or explanation and IT HURT BAD! When I jumped with pain I was told I "need to calm down", oh really?? Obviously the drops hadn't numbed my eye enough, something else was then put in which really stung and then I was numb.

After initial prep the procedure was handed over to the young 'trainee' and the dialogue was so frightening, It's like they forgot I could hear them! Things like telling them to be less tense and pointing out things that they were doing wrong, going in at the wrong angle, and to avoid the "danger zone".

.... honestly the worst 45 minutes ever.  After it was done and I had the standard checks like blood pressure...which was slightly raised....no kidding! I was examined, the training surgeon said everything was good but when the other checked, the incision was leaking. I was told normally I would be taken back into theatre for a stitch but theatre was closed !  So a contact lense was put in and I had to go back next day, next day (after a terrible night of pain and pressure where I feared for my sight) it still hadn't healed so the contact was replaced and of course being the weekend I had to return on the Monday after an uncomfortable weekend it was finally better. An awful experience which left me drained and I know I will not get the other side done unless I really really need to!
